Melissa Guzy

Managing Partner

Melissa Guzy is a Managing Partner of Arbor Ventures has more than 25 years of experience as an entrepreneur and as a venture investor. Prior to Arbor, Melissa was the Managing Director and head of VantagePoint Asia.

In 2007, Melissa moved to Hong Kong to build VantagePoint's investment practice in the region, establishing offices in Hong Kong, Beijing and Shanghai, and invested in early stage technology companies in both Asia and in Silicon Valley. Prior Investments include Finisar, NuCore (Mediatek), Pure Digital (Cisco), Oxford Semiconductor (PLX Technology) and iWatt (Dialogics).

Current board positions include Exchange Corporation and DemystData. Prior to joining VantagePoint, Melissa co-founded and served as CEO of a VantagePoint portfolio company in the semiconductor market. Melissa attended Wellesley College and received a Master's degree in Finance from the University of Florida.

Wei Hopeman

Managing Partner

Wei Hopeman is a Managing Partner at Arbor Ventures. Prior to Arbor, Wei was Managing Director and Head of Asia for Citi Ventures, Citigroup's strategic venture investment and innovation arm. She established the group in Asia to invest in financial services, payments, digital commerce, Big Data and analytics. Additionally, her team incubated new technology and go-to market models at Citi to accelerate disruption from within.

Wei brings with her a unique set of experience and perspective in finance and technology spanning the Silicon Valley, China and Asia. Prior to joining Citi, she managed the China private equity practice at Winnington Capital. She also established the China office for Jefferies & Company and was a technology investment banker in the Silicon Valley with Jefferies and Goldman Sachs.

Wei has a BA in International Relations from Pomona College and an MBA from Stanford Graduate School of Business. She serves on the board of AngelVest, the largest angel investment group in Greater China. She is also the Vice Chairman of Women in Leadership in China.

Christiaan Kaptein, CFA


Chris is a Partner of Arbor Ventures. Prior to Arbor, he spent 7 years with Robeco Group, a global investment group with USD 250 billion in assets under management. At Robeco Chris was responsible for Venture investments in Asia. Prior to that, Chris advised Robeco senior management on Asian strategy, M&A, and business development as the first employee for Robeco in Greater China and South East Asia.

Chris holds a MS degree in Econometrics from Maastricht University, is a CFA charterholder, and studied Mandarin at Fudan University in Shanghai. Chris has lived and worked in Taipei, Shanghai and Hong Kong since 2004 and speaks and reads Mandarin.

Dr. Daisuke Dan Nagayama

Director of Japan & Partner

Dan is an active member of the Japanese startup scene, and leads Arbor Ventures's operations in Japan, Korea and Taiwan. Prior to joining Arbor, Dan co-founded and served as Chief Executive Officer at Dennoo Inc., a California-based advertising technology startup seeking to make 'time' the currency for online video advertising.

Dan sits on the board of several leading technology startups in Asia and California, serves as executive officer of a leading Japanese data science company, and serves as advisor to one of the largest advertising agency groups in Japan.

Dan received a Ph.D. in International Studies and a M.Eng. in Civil Engineering from the University of Tokyo, where he was awarded the Presidential Award in 2010 and the Graduate School of Frontier Sciences Award in 2013. Dan was also a winner of the St. Gallen Symposium Wings of Excellence Award in 2007 and 2010, the representative from the University of Tokyo at the G8 Student Summit, and a member of the Japan Mensa Society.

Dr. Hermann Liu

Technology Partner

Hermann has over 20 years of experience in financial technology development. Prior to joining Arbor, Hermann was the co-founder and President of GFT, a Chinese financial information platform for institutional clients. Under his leadership, GFT has built its successful product line by some most advanced big data technology, such as Hadoop, column database (Cassandra), non-SQL database (neo4j) and SAP Hana in-memory database.

Hermann served in Morgan Stanley and Charles Schwab, where he led the development of the first online and wireless trading systems. Hermann received a Ph.D. in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Northeastern University, an MPA from the Harvard Kennedy School and a BS in Electrical Engineering from Tsinghua University.

Dr. Pengcheng Song


PC joined Arbor Ventures in September 2012 as an Associate. Prior to Arbor, he spent eight months with InvestLab Technology, a SaaS startup building a crossborder stock-trading platform, where he served as Business Strategy Analyst together with various other tasks such as software testing and programming.

Prior to InvestLab, PC spent two years as an Associate at VantagePoint Capital Partners, where he co-developed China Low Carbon Index with Melissa Guzy and was responsible for developing investment thesis on the Fintech sector. PC holds a PhD in Finance from University of Hong Kong and a BA Economics from Renmin University of China.

Edward Cumberlege


Ed joined Arbor Ventures in September 2013 as an Analyst. Prior to joining Arbor Ventures, Ed worked at Sagamore Investment Management in Beijing on the China direct investment team. Ed also interned in Business Development at ACCION Microfinance China in Inner Mongolia.

Ed obtained a BSc in Mathematics from the University of Edinburgh, graduating with first class honors. As part of his studies, Ed spent a year on exchange at Hong Kong University, where he also studied Mandarin.
